The new state-of-the-art York Regional Police #1 District headquarters, serving residents in northern York Region, opened in Newmarket Jan. 10. Designed by Parkin Architects, he new headquarters will serve a growing population of more than 200,000 residents in Newmarket, Aurora, East Gwillimbury, King Township and small portions on the northern borders of Vaughan and Whitchurch-Stouffville, and is designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver standards to minimize energy costs and greenhouse emissions.
The two-storey building is 49,500 square-feet and sits on more than two acres of land. It features public spaces for community access, administrative and office spaces for police use, vehicle storage space, interview rooms, holding cells, and amenities for officers like fitness rooms and lockers.
A grand-opening had been hoped for, but pandemic restrictions at the time required the opening be more subdued.
The facility at 429 Harry Walker Pkwy. will be home to almost 200 sworn and civilian workers, and it will be open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year.
